Towson Reprimanded For Missing Game Due To Weather

Jan 29, 2011 12:21 PM

A rough 10-hour drive over 70 miles in a snowstorm forced a postponement of Wednesday night's matchup between Towson and heavily-favored George Mason.

The Tigers were stuck in traffic just a few miles from George Mason's home court when the 7 p.m. scheduled tipoff came and went. The game was postponed to 9 p.m. but Towson's team bus made no progress, moving about 10 yards over the course of an hour. The game was postponed again until Thursday, when George Mason defeated Towson, 84-58.

The Colonial Athletic Association, however, thought Towson should have taken a more proactive approach to its travel plans. The league issued a reprimand Thursday to the Tigers for missing tipoff.

"While everyone understands travel complications with winter storms, there is no evidence that any consideration was made by Towson to adjust their normal travel plans to account for the anticipated problems," CAA Commissioner Tom Yeager said in a statement.

Delaware Preparing For George Mason

Jan 24, 2011 4:41 PM

Delaware has won three straight games and will face George Mason on Monday night.

Two of the wins came with shots at the buzzer and the other with a late go-ahead basket and a couple defensive stops as time was running out.

A victory would truly stamp Delaware as a factor in the league race, which reaches the halfway point tonight with all 12 teams playing their ninth games.

“Any league I’ve ever been in,” coach Monte Ross said, “that’s the formula for success . . . It just so happens that the opponent is George Mason, who is always one of the tops in the league. I think further establishing our ability to protect our homecourt is the most important thing.”

Pecora Thought Of Rival Coach When He Left Hofstra

Jan 8, 2011 11:35 AM

When Tom Pecora was debating whether to leave Hofstra after nine seasons to take over Fordham’s men’s basketball program, he thought of Blaine Taylor, his Colonial Association rival at Old Dominion.

After leading Montana to three postseason appearances in seven years, Taylor spent three seasons, from 1998 to 2000, as an assistant coach at Stanford before leaving for Old Dominion in 2001.

“It took a lot of guts for him to pick up and leave Montana, where he was having great success, and go to Stanford, and then to move from Stanford all the way across the country,” Pecora said. “I give him a lot of credit for that. There’s so many people in life who are in comfort zones, and they never want to leave those comfort zones and challenge themselves.

“It’s something I thought about when I decided to leave Hofstra … not to fear but embrace the challenge, and go out and face it head-on and try to build something special. I really think he’s done that at ODU.”
